Where is your soap made?
Each bar of Wild Raven Soap you purchase is carefully handmade by us in-house in Moab, Utah, a small town on the edge of the desert in the southeast part of the state.
Are your soap and skin care products handmade?
Yes. When you purchase a bar of Wild Raven soap (or one of our skin care products) you know you are getting a premium product. Not only do we use high-quality ingredients, but we craft every batch of our products by hand, in-house in Moab, Utah. We formulate, mix, pour, cut, cure, test, stamp, bottle, label, package, and ship all our products by hand. We’re about as handmade as it gets.

How is your soap made?
We use the traditional cold-process method of soap making, using all natural ingredients to make each batch of soap. Cold process soap making is the act of mixing carrier oils (olive oil, coconut oil, etc.) with an alkali (sodium hydroxide or lye). The result is a chemical process called saponification, where the composition of the oils changes with the help of the lye to create a bar of soap. Since the cold process of soap making does not call for heating of essential oils and carrier oils (which can break down and hamper the effects of both types of oil), cold process soap making yields a longer lasting, stronger-smelling, more colorful bar of soap, with a better lather.
Do you use lye when making your soap?
Yes. By definition, soap making is the act of mixing carrier oils (olive oil, coconut oil, etc.) with an alkali (sodium hydroxide or lye) and it is impossible to make soap without it. However, after the process of making soap is complete, no lye remains in the finished product. 100% of the lye added to our recipes bonds with the oils and through the saponification process, becoming soap and glycerin. In addition, our soaps are all made with an excess of oil (a soap making process known as “super fatting”) so that there is some of it left in the final product as well. This is done to both ensure the bars are extra moisturizing and that all of the lye has been fully dissolved and none remains in the final product.
How long does a bar of soap last?
Our soap dries very hard, which means a longer life for the bar. However, a bar of soap in the shower or bath will get used up more quickly than a bar used strictly for hand or face washing. For hand and face washing, a bar can last up to 1 to 2 months. In the shower or bath, a bar will last about 2 to 3 weeks. To extend the life of your bar of Wild Raven Soap, keep it from sitting in water, use a soap dish, and let it dry between uses.
Do you test your products on animals?
No. All our products are cruelty free and we never test them on animals. This includes our soaps specifically formulated for dogs, which we always test on ourselves first before bathing our canine companion with them. In fact, we always test each batch of soap that we sell on ourselves first. In addition, many of our friends and family members are happy to volunteer to be our testers and often provide us with valuable feedback that helps us produce a better final product.
Are your products palm oil free?
No. We use palm oil in some of our soap bars. However, in keeping with the social & environmental goals of our company, Wild Raven Soap proactively supports the sustainable palm industry, and only uses palm oil in our products that is produced in an eco-friendly manner. All our suppliers of palm oil are members of the RSPO, POIG, or Palm Done Right. Our current supplier also provides only fair-trade, organic palm oil. We also offer many palm-oil free products for those customers who still do not wish to have it in their soap and body products.
Are your products free from synthetic fragrances?
Yes. Synthetic fragrances are man-made scents, most of which are derived from petrochemicals, including benzene derivatives, aldehydes, phthalates, and a slew of other known toxins. Scientific studies have shown that these chemicals are capable of causing cancer, birth defects, nervous-system disorders, hormone activity disruption, obesity, diabetes and allergies. Wild Raven Soap Company uses only plant-derived, therapeutic grade essential oils to scent our soaps that are beneficial to your mind, body and soul.
Are your products free from artificial dyes and colors?
Yes. Man-made, artificial colors and dyes are generally made up of at least 25 different chemicals, and purple dyes can contain up to 50 different chemicals. Unfortunately, many of these artificial colors and dyes, including Blue-1, Yellow-5 and Yellow-6 have been linked by scientists to cancer, allergy-like hypersensitivity, hyperactivity in children, and adrenal gland and kidney tumors. Wild Raven Soap Company’s products are free from artificial colors and dyes. We only use all natural colorants in our products such as pigments, clays, and plant materials.
Are your products free from parabens and other synthetic preservatives?
Yes. Many commercial soap makers and manufacturers add chemical preservatives to their products, such as parabens, to prolong shelf life. Scientific studies have shown, however, that exposure to these chemical preservatives may lead to increased levels of estrogen in the human body and potentially increase the risk of cancer. Wild Raven Soap Company never uses parabens or other chemical preservatives in its products.
Are your products free from SLS?
Yes. SLS (Sodium Laurel Sulfate or Sodium Laureth Sulfate) and other sulfates are often added to commercial soaps to increase lather quality. They are commonly found in bar soaps, liquid soaps, and shampoos. As man-made synthetic compounds, SLS and other surfactants can dry out your skin and, for many people, may cause skin irritation and rashes. We use neither SLS nor any other sulfates in our soaps.
Are your products vegan?
Almost all of our products are vegan, but some are not. The animal-derived products we use in some of our products are honey, beeswax, lanolin, and goat's milk. Our soaps contain no animal fats such as lard and tallow, and we only use a vegan base of natural plant oils and butters to make them. We also provide a complete list of ingredients for each of our products on our website and our packaging so you can make an informed choice about a product that is right for your lifestyle.
Are your products gluten-free?
Yes. All of our products are made using gluten-free ingredients and we source the few grains we use in our soaps (such as oats), from suppliers whose products and facilities have been tested and certified as gluten-free.
Do your products contain nuts?
We do not use nuts as a main ingredient in any of our products. However, some of the carrier oils in our soaps are derived from tree nuts (such as shea butter and sweet almond oil), and may contain trace amounts of proteins that are known to cause allergic reactions in some individuals. Each product on our website includes a complete list of ingredients. People with sensitivities to any listed ingredient should not use the product.
Do your products contain Genetically Modified Organisms?
As part of Wild Raven Soap Company’s commitment to sustainability and the environment, all of our products are GMO-free.
Can I use your products while pregnant or nursing?
Although most of our products are made using a low concentration of essential oils we would still suggest you err on the side of caution. If you are pregnant or nursing please check with your health care provider before changing your skin care routine to include our products.
Can I use your soap on babies or young children?
Yes. We suggest you consider our mildest and most gentle soaps such as our Unscented Aloe, Chamomile, and Calendula bars before moving on to other soaps. As with all new products, it is best to do a skin patch test prior to usage to test for any allergies or sensitivities. If you have any questions or concerns always check with your pediatrician or health care professional.
What bars of soap would you recommend for everyday use?
For people with normal skin, all of our bars can be used on a daily basis. However, for regular use, we recommend our Peppermint, Ultimate Orange, Sandalwood Spice and Lavender Harvest bars for their ability to gently exfoliate dead skin cells while cleansing, deodorizing, and moisturizing your face, hands, and body at the same time.
What bars of soap would you recommend for dry/sensitive skin?
For people with dry, sensitive skin we recommend our mildest and most gentle soaps such as our Chamomile and Calendula bars to lightly wash your face, hands, and body and help sooth a variety of skin conditions, including rashes, erythema, burns, eczema, and psoriasis.
Also any of our bars that contain honey, a natural humectant, such as our Oatmeal Honey soaps can help increase your skins ability to absorb and retain higher levels of hydration and moisturize your skin.
What bars of soap would you recommend for acne/oil-prone skin?
For people prone to having oily skin or who suffer from clogged pores, skin blemishes, and acne, we recommend our Tea Tree Charcoal and Turmeric Honey facial bars or Rosemary Clay face soap. These bars contain essential oils that act as natural astringents, helping to eliminate oily skin, while activated charcoal and Cambrian blue clay detoxify and draw out skin impurities.
I have allergies, which of your products are safe for me to use?
Trying to choose the right natural soap and skin care products can be a bit overwhelming especially when you have allergies and/or skin sensitivities. This is one of the reasons we list every ingredient in all of our products. Reading the ingredient list will help to eliminate ingredients that may cause you problems. If you still want advice on which products are best for you, please feel free to contact us and we will be happy to answer any questions or address your concerns.
People with severe allergies please note: If you have severe anaphylactic-type reactions to any of the ingredients in any of our products, please do not use them. We have a dedicated kitchen for making our products that is kept meticulously clean, but we cannot guarantee against possible cross-contamination of individual ingredients.
Wild Raven Soap Company is not responsible for any individual reaction to any particular ingredient. Each product on our website includes a complete list of ingredients. People with sensitivities to any listed ingredient should not use that product. When in doubt, always try an allergy patch test and if at any time irritation occurs, discontinue use.
What is the shelf life of your products?
Each of our products has a best-use-by date on the label which is 1-2 years from the date of production. We recommend that all our products are used within this time period for best quality.
Do you offer custom orders?
Requests for custom orders are always welcome, but may require a month or two of lead time to complete so our soap can cure. We will do our best to accommodate any special requests for weddings, reunions, bridal and baby showers, parties, special events, or gatherings.
In addition to our pre-made gift sets, we can also provide soap party favors, gift baskets or something special just for you. Please contact us for details and to discuss your next event!
Do you offer wholesale pricing on your products?
Yes. We are always open to new retail stores carrying our products. However, at this time, we are only able to accommodate a limited number of new wholesale customers in order to keep up with the production requirements of our current wholesalers.
